Fall Film, A Sneak Peek & An Epiphany

This weekend I began my traditional Fall Film Festival, kicking it off with a Chevy Chase classic: Funny Farm.

At the start of the movie, Chevy and his wife move to the country. Their first night in their new home, however, is spent on the floor because their movers get lost.

"When they say hardwood floors, what they really mean is hard wood floors."

I never tire of this movie.

On the to-do list this weekend - you know, aside from spending half the weekend in bed with a stomach bug - was assembling Kendry's big boy bed.

When I say big boy bed, what I really mean is BIG boy bed.

Note to self:
objects on Craigslist may be larger than they initially appear.

Sorry for the blurry pic but I couldn't stop laughing over the fact that Kendry's new bed is almost to his shoulders. Thus the stepstool.

I will post a full reveal soon. Just gotta finish up the drawers and wait for the quilt to arrive.

Ten on Tuesday

{1}
Pinned it and did it!
This is my new teacher tote for Sunday School.

I'm not usually a fan of ombre; it just sorta came together that way as I toyed with my paint.

{2}
While Daddy was busy golfing on Saturday, Kendry and I attended the Lewiston Round-Up Parade.

The parade was halfway over before Kendry understood how to run out and retrieve the thrown candy. He even had the grandmas sitting beside us rootin' for him.

Apparently the LC Valley has its down roller derby team. Who knew?!

Out of an entire two hour parade, the spectacle most ingrained on Kendry's brain was the guy dressed up as a Subway sandwich. He talked about it the rest of the weekend.

Well, that and the candy, of course.

{3}
We really aren't the type of people who buy seasons of shows on DVD - except for Friends, but thats just a given.

I'm not attune to the shenanigans going on between CBS and the makers of Person of Interest, but they sure are making it difficult to purchase/watch episodes online.

With the season premiere airing on September 27th we just couldn't wait any longer.

Movie marathon, anyone?

Person of Interest: Season One

{4}
We will never forget.

{5}
Fertility injections = moody wife

Just ask Justin.

{6}
Our little Cubby:

I'm not gonna lie, I choked up a little when they fitted him for his vest.

{7}
Our neighbors assembled one monster of a swingset this weekend; it has Kendry gazing out the front window in longing.

{8}
This ugly plastic bag has been stuck up in our tree since a windstorm last winter.

And by stuck I mean really stuck. We've had a few good windstorms since its arrival and that little stinker ain't budging. To make matters worse, its become weighted down with a little water - how I don't know since I can't tell you the last time it rained here.

I'm not kidding, its been over a month.

Excuse me a moment while I wet (whet?) my parched troat.

Ahem!

Anyway, the bag is too high to reach with a ladder - not that we're bothered by it enough to become "those crazy neighbors who set up their ladder in the middle of the street".

I am open to any ideas you might have for bringing that thing down. In case you can't tell, it is driving. me. bonkers.

The only reasonable solution I can find is to cut down the tree.

Or resort to something like the giant poking device from Friends, except mine will have gardening shears at the tip.

I wonder what the neighbors will think of me then.

{9}
Speaking of ombre,
check out the grass by our front fence.

Yikes!

{10}
This Week's Blessing:
Musical dinner theater.

Normally we discourage Kendry from singing at the dinner table as it hinders his eating progress. Plus its noisy and not proper table manners. But I didn't even try to stop him Sunday night as he softly serenaded us with "His Banner Over Me is Love" and "God is So Good".

I hope he always loves singing to his parents, and to his Savior, like this.

A Touch of {Functional} Vintage

I love a little vintage here and there in my decor.

I snatched up these two old suitcases at a yard sale awhile back.

I could stare at their wear and tear for hours and ponder where these suitcases have been, who they belonged to, how old they are...

There are some incredible decorating possibilities out there for old suitcases like this:

One reason I fell in love with the idea of using these suitcases in my decor:
STORAGE SPACE!

In my opinion, you simply cannot beat a fun accent piece that doubles as storage - something our house seriously lacks.

Would it have killed the builder to throw in a linen closet or a coat closet somewhere?!

Anywhere?!

Sheesh.

Anyway, back to my suitcase.

As much as I love these pieces, I couldn't bring myself to throw a cherished item like my Christmas quilt into an old suitcase not knowing what that inner lining has been exposed to. Eww!

So I ripped it all out. Then I picked out some spare fabric, fired up my trusty hot glue gun and got to work.

Hot Glue Guns 101:
STOP all projects by 11pm or you are sure to burn yourself.

Doh!

Here is suitcase #1 with her new pretty lining:

Not only does she add a little character to our guest room but she also provides storage for the beautiful tree skirt I completed in December. Remember all those 'ruffles, ruffles, ruffles'?

Yeeeaah, ruffles = poofy.
Very poofy.

"Where on earth am I going to store this mass?" poofy.

But she fits well into the suitcase, and now I have peace of mind that my tree skirt is staying clean and pretty.

On a side note, do you ever have those moments where you forget about a craft/project you have finished?

Last week I went to retrieve some old drapes from my fabric stash and stumped myself for a few minutes when I couldn't find them.

Then I remembered I used them to make this tree skirt.

My beautiful shabby chic tree skirt!

I swear I'm not looking to set up my Christmas tree any time soon, but that tree skirt is really calling my name.

iSpeak No iPhone

The other night Kendry asked to listen to his Veggie Tales music on the iPod, so together we walked out to retrieve the iPod from the car. When I handed it to him he promptly said, "I want the iPhone, Mom."

The catch?
We don't have an iPhone.

Google

Kendry's statement stopped me in my tracks. How on earth does he know what an iPhone is?

I answered him casually: "Nope, thats an iPod, bud. That plays your music."

"Noooo, I want the iPhone." (Can you hear the whine building?)

"Kendry, we do not have an iPhone. You're fine with the iPod."

"Nooooo, I need the iPhone!"

At this point I could feel my blood pressure rising. Was I seriously defending myself to a three year old because we don't own an iPhone? My mind quickly formed a list of Kendry's daycare classmates and I began to visualize each adorable little face, pondering which of the little troublemakers had convinced my son that he was already technologically behind.

"Nooo, Mom. I want to listen to my music. I need the ear phone!"

And then it made sense.

iPhone.
eyePhone.
earPhone.
headPhone.

Headphones! Thats what he was after!

Whew.

Chalk another one up to parent-child miscommunication.

Once I got Kendry settled in with the iPod and headphones I couldn't help but chuckle at my emotions over this dialogue with him.

You see, this is our cell phone.

I'll bet you didn't even know they still made ones phones like this. Actually, they probably don't. Ours is at least four years old now. Its an AT&T Go-Phone for which we pay $26 every three months. It doesn't take or send pictures. It doesn't access the web. It can text, but that'll cost ya ten cents per text.

Its a bare bones phone for emergencies and travel, and it suits us.

Lend me your smartphone to make a quick call and I won't have the faintest idea how to use it.
Now answer me this: is that a bad thing?
Personally, we love not feeling tied down by a cell phone. We don't take our go-phone with us everywhere, nor does anyone really call us on it, because like I said, its for travel and emergencies.
And let's be honest here, before cell phones came along we survived just fine being out of touch for an afternoon or - dare I say it? - a trip to the park with our child.
Which is what prompted me to write this post.
Last week Justin and I took Kendry to the park. Usually we sit on a nearby bench and talk, occasionally getting up to play with and/or chase Kendry. There was another little boy there, about five years old, playing happily while his mother (mid-thirties, I would say) sat on another bench, eyes glued to her phone. This went on for a little while, until the mother notified her son she needed to sit in the car. She assured him, however, that if he called or waved to her she would hear him and answer. And in her defense, she could see him clearly the entire time.
Do you suppose her phone battery was dying and she needed to recharge it in the car?
Five minutes after she retreated to the car this woman's son came running across the park excitedly shouting "Mom, come look at this! Mom! Mom, come quick!"
He called a few more times, but she didn't respond. She was on her phone. I watched as this little boy's excited expression melted into hurt and disappointment, and it broke my heart.
To be fair, I do not know what this mother has going on in her life. Maybe she did have an important call to make. Maybe she had entertained her son all day and now he needed time to entertain himself.
But to be honest, I see this happening everywhere, and not just with our kids.
Have you ever been talking to someone when they get a text and they immediately rip their phone out of their pocket to read it, regardless if you are still mid-sentence?
Do you really need to take your phone out with you running? Goodness! Exercising is my 'me' time; I never take a phone.
"But what if someone needs to reach me?"
Then they'll reach you when they reach you. Its not going to kill you to turn your phone completely off during a movie.
Or church.
I'm guilty of it too, folks. While I don't have a fancy phone, I have noticed myself getting sucked into my Kindle Fire from time to time. Suddenly I realize that Justin has asked me a question and I didn't even catch what he asked. Or Kendry is halfway into my lap and I'm irritated because he's interrupting me, rather than noticing that my little man is needing some mommy time.
I'm not saying that iPhones are bad. I'm not saying that the internet or technology are bad. You already know I'm a Pinterest addict. These are all amazing tools, when you use them properly. And truth be told, if you gave me a free iPhone tomorrow I would take it - although coming up with a monthly data plan budget would have Justin promptly selling said free iPhone on ebay.
I simply want to challenge you to unplug every once in awhile.
Venture out to the grocery store without your phone.
Take a weekend break from Facebook.
Forget about multi-tasking (and the free WiFi) for a few minutes and savor the joy of your child playing nicely with other children at the McDonald's playplace.
You may be surprised at some of the simpler things in life you've been missing.

Ten on Tuesday

{1}
How's this for starting a day off right?

This balloon landed two lots over on Monday morning. Kendry was beside himself with excitement.

{2}
Kendry starts Awana this week!

I can't believe my baby is old enough to be a Cubby.

{3}
Don't try to tell me its not fall.

When my calendar flips to September I am lighting the scented candles.

{4}
Riding in the car the other day:

Kendry: "Mom?"

Me: "Yes, bud?"

Kendry: "God made you special."

{5}
Tears - even tears of joy - make it difficult to keep your eyes on the road.

{6}
 Houston, we have a window.

I would love to tell you the finished laundry area is our next project reveal, but that would be a lie. We've still got a ways to go on that one.

By the way, that yellow foam stuff is a bugger to work with.

At least thats what Justin tells me.

{7}
True or False:
I found some ground red pepper in my spice cabinet that expired in 2003.

True or False:
There were tiny creatures living in said ground red pepper.

{8}
It might be time for a spice cabinet purge.

And makeover.

Oh to be this organized.

Pinned Image

I'll bet none of her spices are nearly ten years old.

{9}
Sneak peek of Kendry's 'before' bed:

Its getting a coat of Annie Sloan Aubusson Blue this week and its looking awesome!

{10}
This Week's Blessing:
A chance to give it one more try.
